Tesla Portable Charging Connector (UMC) Guide to Use



Recently, some car owners have received the portable charging connector (UMC) sent by Tesla. It can be carried on board, installed simply, and the interface is widely used. It can be used as an emergency charging scheme for car owners.

How to use UMC?


UMC is equipped with two charging interfaces, a black adapter and a red adapter, which are charged by household and industrial sockets respectively.


Black single-phase electrical adapter: 220 volts 8 AMPERES (hereinafter referred to as "1P"). It is suitable for household ordinary three-socket sockets, and the connection mode is the same as that of general household appliances (e.g. air conditioning, etc.). Charging speed: can charge about 1.7 kilowatt-hour, about 7-8 km.

Red three-phase electrical adapter: 380 volts 16 amperes (hereinafter referred to as "3P"). Applicable to factories, office buildings, parking lots and other residential areas with 380 volt power supply environment. Charging speed: It can charge about 10 degrees of electricity per hour, about 47-55 km in mileage.




What kind of connection plug do you choose?

1P: Use sockets with ground wires that meet national standards. Because of the large charging current, it is not recommended to use the plug-in for connection lengthening.

3P: You can install IEC 5-hole 16A industrial socket where you often go. It is also recommended to use 5 x 6 mm or high-quality cables higher than the national standard for connection.

Matters needing attention:

Whether charging in 1P or 3P mode, ground wire protection should be connected. Effective grounding of power supply will effectively protect your vehicle and property safety, while protecting your personal safety and other people's safety in the event of electric leakage and other accidents.

When using UMC, environmental safety should be ensured, such as access to the circuit with leakage protection switch, avoiding other people's damage in the use process, etc.

When charging with UMC, make it work in independent circuit as far as possible, and select the conformable leakage protection air switch. (Example: 1P chooses 2 routes 10A, 3P chooses 4 routes 20A.)



If charging in the form of 3P, please ensure that the IEC red three-phase electrical socket used for connection is safe, strong and durable.

The installation of industrial sockets must be completed by qualified electricians.

UMC is only suitable for emergency charging. The wall-mounted household charging connector is recommended for daily charging.

Conventional problems

The red light on UMC flickers four times: the ground connection does not meet the requirements. It is suggested that professional electricians should check the grounding part of the power supply and socket, or try to replace other power supply sockets.

Connect the vehicle and trip after charging: the air circuit breaker above the power supply can carry too low current, please check the load in the circuit and adjust the specifications of the air protection switch in the access line according to the actual load;




Others: Please try to reset UMC for 8 seconds by pressing the red reset button on the back of the UMC host. Or call 4009100707 for Tesla technical support.

Mailing address

Scanned document of motor vehicle driving license or invoice

You will receive an automated response from Tesla confirming that we have received your mail.

Note: Since January 1, 2015, customers who lift cars have been equipped with UMC, and need not apply separately.
